A PLAN to designate 500,000 square kilometres of Alaska’s northern coast as “critical habitat” for polar bears may be too little too late. The US Department of the Interior has proposed the designation for the entire range of the country’s Chukchi Sea and Southern Beaufort Sea populations – approximately 2500 bears in total. The protected area would include the bears’ sea ice habitat, as well as barrier islands and spits along Alaska’s coast, and surrounding water to a depth of 300 metres.
