Underwater town beats antiquity record

THE discovery of 5000-year-old pottery in ruins beneath the Mediterranean makes the site the world’s oldest known undersea town, the Greek government said last week. Pavlopetri, off the southern coast of the Pelopennese in Greece, was discovered in 1967 by Nic Flemming of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK. At the time Flemming dated it to around 1500 BC, but the latest find pushes the date back to about 3000 BC. Also discovered were a further 9000 square metres of buildings,
